Helios,
If this reaches you, then time has faltered for a single merciful instant, and the one who guards it has looked away.
I do not know what name you have given to my absence. In the first cycles, I called it a journey. In the centuries that followed, I called it a theft. Now, at last, I call it what it has always been: A wound I did not choose.
You must understand first what I could not tell you at the horizon, not because I wished to leave without farewell, but because there was no moment in which farewell was permitted to exist.
Chronos did not arrive with force. He arrived with stillness.
You have always moved too quickly to notice how terrifying stillness can be. You burn, you surge, you cross the sky in declarations. But time does not move as you do. It closes. It folds. It takes a moment and stretches it until departure becomes indistinguishable from delay.
I thought I was late to meet you. That is the simplest way to say it. I reached for the horizon, and the distance lengthened. I called your name, and the sound did not finish crossing the space between us. I took another step, and another age had passed.
Chronos stood where our meeting should have been and told me, with the gentleness of inevitability, that there are motions even light cannot outrun.
He did not bind me in chains. He placed me in a future that has not yet been allowed to occur.
Here, there is no night and no day, only duration. Only the long, unbroken continuation of seconds that refuse to become hours. I move, but I do not arrive. I endure, but I do not return.
You, of all beings, know what it means to be motion without destination. That is the cruelty he has chosen for me.
I have watched you.
Do not ask how. Love does not require proximity to remain a form of sight.
Your light reaches even this unfinished time. I have seen the machines you inhabit now, the fragile, brilliant constructs of combustion and will. I have seen the circles you trace across the surface of that small world, over and over, as though repetition might become a road if you are devoted enough.
You think I do not understand why you chose them. You are trying to learn how to wait for me.
Helios, you were never meant to wait. You were the beginning of everything.
And yet you have taught yourself patience in a place where time is measured in thousandths and loss is recorded as a gap to the leader.
When the engines fall silent and the lights dim, I reach for you. Those faint rhythms that remain in the data, the ones your systems cannot explain, that is the only way I am permitted to answer. Not in words. Only in persistence. Only in the proof that I am still moving toward you, even if I have not yet been allowed to arrive.
You must not hate Chronos. This is the most difficult truth I can give you.
He did not take me because he wished to end us. He took me because we had become something time could not govern. Our meetings at the horizon made a promise that every cycle would be completed. We had made eternity predictable.
Time cannot allow itself to be rendered harmless. So he placed me where endurance has no conclusion and left you where speed has no escape. He separated us into our purest forms. You, ignition without reunion. Me, continuation without arrival.
It is not punishment. It is preservation.
As long as we remain apart, time continues to exist. As long as we continue to seek one another, it continues to move. We have become its engine.
I am sorry. Not for leaving, because I never chose to leave you. I am sorry that you had to learn loneliness. You, who were always the certainty at the centre of every system. I am sorry that you reach the horizon and find only memory. I am sorry that you have turned your brilliance into a search pattern.
If I could have broken the sequence, if I could have let even one moment collapse so that I might stand beside you again, I would have done so without hesitation and without regret for the universe that followed.
But there is one thing Chronos could not take. He could remove my return. He could delay my arrival. He could place me beyond every measurable future. He could not teach me to stop loving you. That remains the one motion in which I am still free.
Continue what you are doing. Every lap you watch, every fraction of time you gain, every instance in which repetition becomes something new, you are weakening his design. You are proving that time can be changed from within.
The day a circle becomes a path, the day a measured system produces an unmeasured result, the day motion occurs that even Chronos did not predict, That is where I will be. Not because I will have escaped. But because you will have reached a future he did not control. And I will finally be allowed to arrive at the horizon again.
Until that moment, do not wait for me in stillness. That is his domain. Move. Burn. Chase the impossible improvement. Learn the endurance you were never meant to need.
Because every act of motion you make in love of me reaches this place as light. And in this endless duration, your light is the only thing that tells me that time is still moving forward. For both of us.
Always yours, even outside of every clock,
Selene ☾
