House ledger · chapter 8

GUESTS

10 formatted records from the House ledger.

WANDERERS

The most human guests.

They usually arrive through:

  • Wrong doors
  • Elevators
  • Roads
  • Closets
  • Train cars
  • Bookstores
  • Fog
  • Impossible hallways

Most are lost rather than dangerous.

ECHO SPIRITS

Faint, reflective beings carrying fragments of old memory.

They often arrive during storms.

Many do not remember:

  • Their names
  • Their homes
  • Their lives
  • Whether they were ever alive

Some eventually remember enough to move on.

Others remain within Nox.

DREAMWALKERS

Guests whose minds enter Nox while their bodies remain asleep elsewhere.

They are especially common after midnight.

Their dreams may physically affect the House.

Nightmares occasionally follow them inside.

Morpheus handles most Dreamwalker incidents.

COLOUR SPRITES

Small creatures created through Nyx's colour magic.

Technically not guests.

Technically probably Nyx's fault.

OBSERVERS

Tall, faceless beings found standing in dark corners.

They never speak.

They rarely interfere.

They simply watch.

Observers frequently appear near:

  • Prophecies
  • Important arrivals
  • Forbidden doors
  • Temporal anomalies
  • Major revelations

Atlas classifies them as:

Uninvited Witnesses.

STRAYS

Creatures without anywhere else to belong.

Some are animals.

Some are spirits.

Some appear to be mistakes made by tired gods.

Artemis works closely with them.

MARKED GUESTS

Rare guests already connected to Nox before arriving.

Possible signs include:

  • Black keys
  • Crescent marks
  • Colour veils
  • Clocks frozen at thirteen
  • Knowledge of staff names
  • Memories of Nox from other timelines

The House does not mark people randomly.

CLOCK-TOUCHED

Guests affected by damaged time.

They may remember events that have not happened or carry objects from timelines that should not exist.

STARFALLEN

Guests arriving through broken celestial paths.

Caelus and Selene usually understand them best.

HOLLOW GUESTS

Among the most dangerous guests.

They appear completely ordinary.

Too ordinary.

Warning signs include:

  • No shadow
  • No reflection
  • No warmth
  • Names disappearing from the ledger

They are monitored immediately by Archon and Morpheus.
